May 7 is the 128th day of the year, and the American record for it runs from 1840 to 2025 — a span of 185 years. The entry that anchors it: Michigan ratifies a 203-year-old proposed amendment to the United States Constitution making the 27th Amendment law. This amendment bars the U.S. Congress from giving itself a mid-term pay raise, 1992.

By the middle of the nineteenth century the date carries heavier freight. In 1840, the Great Natchez Tornado strikes Natchez, Mississippi killing 317 people.
