August 15 is the 228th day of the year, and the American record for it runs from 1812 to 2025 — a span of 213 years. The entry that anchors it: President Richard Nixon completes the break from the gold standard by ending convertibility of the United States dollar into gold by foreign investors, 1971.

Through the nineteenth century the date gathered the tensions that would define the era. In 1812, War of 1812 — Potawatomi warriors ambushed a United States Army convoy after it had evacuated Fort Dearborn, in present-day Chicago, and razed the fort.
